October 11, 2017 // By Scott Brown

Bacteria usually gets a bad wrap, but did you know that your pond actually NEEDS some bacteria. This is what is typically referred to as Beneficial  Bacteria. This bacteria plays a very important role in the health of your pond.

BioFalls is a type of Biological Filtering system that provides a home for beneficial bacteria to grow and flourish. The bacteria is what works to breakdown and remove harmful waste from your pond’s water using a natural process called “Bio-Filtration”.

Watch the following video for step-by-step instructions on the proper way to clean your BioFalls.

Tips and Tidbits for you to know…

Signs it’s time to clean your BioFalls include:

  • The water flow is actually going around the filter mats instead of moving through the mats as designed.
  • At night if you are noticing a lot of particulate matter (fine debris) floating in front of your pond lights.

The number of times you need to clean your BioFalls depends on the number of fish you have.

Waste from the filter mats makes a really good fertilizer for your garden!

Weekly additions of Beneficial Bacteria (either manually or using an auto doser) will help to keep your pond’s ecosystem working at its peak efficiency.
