Why Are Koi So Expensive?

August 2, 2024 // By Shawnee Thomas

Koi fish, renowned for their striking beauty, are more than just an aesthetic addition to ponds; they command high prices for reasons beyond their visual appeal. For instance, at the All Japan Koi Show 2017, a grand champion koi fish was sold for a record-breaking 1.8 million dollars, highlighting the exceptional value of these fish.

The steep prices of koi largely stem from their breeding history, which dates back to the 1700s in Japan, where rice farmers began selectively breeding them. Similar to dog breeding, koi were chosen for specific traits, especially their unique colors and patterns.

Over the years, koi breeding has evolved into a serious endeavor, with breeders passionately participating in competitions, elevating these events to a prestigious level. This history and the meticulous breeding process contribute significantly to the high value of koi fish.
