Skip the expensive “fish snacks”—you likely have koi-safe options right at your table. Here are 8 koi-approved treats you can feed in moderation:
Grapefruit – Quarter and float it on the pond. Koi love the flavor, but don’t overfeed—too much vitamin C can stain their lips temporarily.
Peas – A great snack that sinks fast! Use partially frozen peas, squeeze out the insides, and drop them in. Easy to digest and loved by koi.
Sardines – Thawed and chopped frozen sardines make a protein-packed summer snack. Just offer a small amount.
Oranges – Seedless orange segments are fun to hand-feed—especially to larger koi.
Cheerios – A kid-friendly choice! Honey Nut Cheerios are often preferred and make a low-residue snack.
Worms – Not from the table, but a top koi favorite. Earthworms and night crawlers are great protein sources.
Romaine Lettuce – Dark romaine is best. Tear into strips and let it float.
Watermelon – A sweet, occasional treat with little mess. Keep portions small.
Remember: Feed only what your koi will eat right away, and remove any leftovers to keep your pond clean!
